What is urinary incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is an involuntary loss of urine that causes some type of discomfort to the person. How many older people does it affect?
Urinary incontinence affects around 20% -25% of people over 65, with prevalences of 15% among those who live in homes and are healthy, between 30% and 35% in hospitalized elderly people, about 50% in “frail” elderly people living in their homes and between 43% and 77% in people living in residences.

Promote self-image and self-esteem.

Encourage social relationships (outings and walks).
Promote and teach personal hygiene, encouraging the person to try to urinate, have wishes or not, every 1.5 or 2 hours to be most of the time with an empty bladder and avoid leaks.
- The older people should use temporary/permanent (or night) diaper.
- A balanced diet and abundant in vegetable fiber (prevention of fecal impaction).
- Maintain the proper weight and exercise regularly should be followed by the person who is above 65 years of age.
- Avoid diets with spicy and/or irritating drinks (coffee, alcohol).
